About the Edit PDF Metadata Tool
Every PDF file carries a set of hidden properties — title, author, subject, keywords, creator, and producer — that describe the document without appearing on any page. ChopFile's metadata editor lets you view and change all of these fields instantly, entirely in your browser, without uploading anything.
How it works
When you drop in a PDF, ChopFile uses the open-source pdf-lib library running directly in your browser to read the existing metadata and populate the form. After you make your edits and click Save & Download, pdf-lib writes the updated properties into a new copy of the document and downloads it to your device. Nothing is ever sent to a server — your file stays private from start to finish.
When to use Edit PDF Metadata
- Scrub personal information before sharing — PDFs created by Microsoft Word or Google Docs often embed your real name, company, and computer username in the author and creator fields. Clear those fields before sending a document to a client or posting it publicly.
- Fix the default "Microsoft Word" author — documents exported from Office carry the account name of whoever created them. Replace it with your organization's name or leave it blank for a cleaner, more professional look.
- Prepare legal and contract documents — law firms and compliance teams often require a specific title, subject, and keyword set for document management systems. Set these before filing.
- Library and archive cataloging — research papers, technical manuals, and e-books are easier to search and sort when their title, author, and subject fields are accurate and consistent.
- Improve search visibility — document management platforms and some search engines index PDF metadata. A clear title and relevant keywords help your files surface in the right searches.
Tips for best results
Load the file first and review what's already embedded — you may find a previous author's name or an internal draft title you didn't know was there. Use the Keywords field to add comma-separated terms that describe the document's content. If the PDF is password-protected, run it through Unlock PDF first. After editing, you can further refine the document by reordering pages with PDF Page Organizer, combining it with other files using Merge PDF, or breaking it into sections with Split PDF.
