About the Add Page Numbers Tool
Adding page numbers is one of those finishing touches that turns a rough document into a professional one. Whether you're submitting an academic paper, filing legal exhibits, printing a meeting handout, or distributing a bound report, page numbers make navigation clear and your document easier to reference. ChopFile stamps numbers directly onto your existing pages — nothing is replaced or removed, only new numbering content is added on top.
How it works
When you click Add Page Numbers, ChopFile uses the open-source pdf-lib library running entirely in your browser to draw a text label onto each page at your chosen position. The number is rendered in Helvetica at the size and position you select, in a neutral dark gray that pairs well with any document style. No file ever leaves your device — the whole process is client-side and completely private.
When to use Add Page Numbers
- Academic papers — most submission guidelines require numbered pages; add them in seconds before uploading to a journal or learning management system.
- Legal filings and exhibits — court filings often require consecutive page numbering across a bundle of exhibits. Use the Start Number field to continue numbering from where the previous exhibit left off (e.g., start at 14 if the prior exhibit ended on page 13).
- Books and long reports — a 40-page report without page numbers is hard to cite and harder to navigate in a meeting. Use "Page 1 of N" format so readers always know where they are in the document.
- Meeting handouts — numbered handouts let a presenter say "turn to page 5" without confusion, even if someone's copy gets shuffled.
- Bundled invoices or statements — when you merge several monthly statements into one file, page numbers make the combined document feel organized and referenceable.
Tips for best results
If your document has a cover page or table of contents that shouldn't show a visible number, use Split PDF to separate the cover first, add numbers to the body starting at the right value, then Merge PDF the cover back on. The Bottom Center position works for most documents, but switch to Bottom Right if your PDF has a footer that would overlap the center. For presentations or wide-format documents, Top Right keeps numbers out of the content area. If your pages are out of order before numbering, run them through PDF Page Organizer first so the numbers match the intended reading sequence.
